Marathon Entry T-Shirts

So a great way to enjoy all of those Marathons that have been run is to turn into a Marathon T-Shirt Quilt. Racing is a passion and a way to challenge yourself. Some race for medals others race for T-Shirts, either way you can end up with a very large collection of T-Shirts that have great meaning and memories filling up drawers, boxes and can be overwhelming.

Typically you receive a T-Shirt as part of your race entry. Whether in a year or in 10 years, you may end up with a drawer full of T-shirts. You know that you don’t have enough days to wear them all. But you can’t give them up. They tell your story.

Perfectly Pieced T-Shirt quilts provided this runner with a great solution to the boxes of T-Shirts they had turning into an heirloom keepsake quilt. The client wanted a typical block design which we used on the front of the quilt and then used a mosaic design on the back to incorporate various sizes. My plan is to put these on the top of the back of the quilt upside down so that it may be turned down to expose all of these wonderful memories.

 Marathon Race Bibs

Have you ever searched the Internet to figure out what to do with race bib numbers? If so, you have probably run across many different amusing and ridiculous uses. From wrapping gifts to papering your walls, the ideas are out there.

Consider having a pillow or quilt made with your race bib numbers. That’s right, with the actual Tyvek race number.

Tyvek is incredible stuff! It doesn’t like to rip. It’s machine washable. It gets softer in every wash. So yes, you can use the actual race number in your quilt.

Here are three ways to consider how to use race numbers in a quilt or pillow:

  1. Have a quilt made with just the race bib numbers. The bibs are not sewn directly to one another; rather they are sewn to and “framed” on pieces of T-shirt material.
  2. Use your race numbers and your race T-shirts mixed together. The bib numbers can be backed with materials that match your T-shirts, or just one color family – such as blue. Putting the race numbers on bright colored material will liven up your quilt.
  3. Mount the race number on its race T-shirt. If you ran the Boston Marathon in 2018, that race bib would be sewn directly onto that particular T-shirt

What Size is Right for You?

T-Shirt Quilts can be used in so many ways. The size you choose defines your quilt’s utility. Here are some tips to help you decide:

  • Lap: Our smallest size is the perfect memento for your man cave, or to hang on the wall of your nursery.
  • Jumbo Lap: Curl up on the couch and stream some home videos under your jumbo lap quilt.
  • Picnic: A picnic-sized quilt makes the perfect play mat for little ones, and provides enough length for a lap blanket for two.
  • Twin XL: The twin XL size was created to fit dorm-style beds.
  • Twin, Full, Queen, and King sizes are all standard to fit the beds in your home.

    Select Design & Size

The first decision to make is whether you would like a Mosaic type design where the size of the block reflects the size of the logo or you can choose a checkerboard design where each T-Shirt is cut into a 12" x 12" block and a 2 inch strip of fabric surrounds each block with a cornerstone. You will then need to determine the size of the quilt that you are interested in. The size will drive the number of T-Shirts that you will need.

    2
    Select T-Shirts

Go through your shirts and understand how many you have as it relates to the number that you will need. I would suggest in the first round you pull together the most sentimental. As you are going through if you feel torn I would suggest adding to the quilt. Once you get through your selection process ensure you have the number of T-Shirts that are needed as outlined in the table below.

    3
    Wash and Dry Your Shirts

Please wash and dry all of the shirts that you will be including in your quilt. Please use detergent but don't use any fabric softener or dryer sheets. We add stabilization to each of the T-Shirts and products such as fabric softener can cause the stabilization fabric not to bind as well. Please DO NOT cut shirts. We will do that after we receive them.

    4
    Mark unwanted graphics

If your T-Shirt has a graphic on the Front and Back and you don't want to use one of them please mark the one you don't want to use. Use blue painter tape to cover with an X any graphic that you DO NOT want to be included in your quilt. Otherwise it will be included in the design.
